HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE will present the second edition of OPEN STUDIO in London, in collaboration with Tate, introducing a capsule collection created around one of Henri Matisse’s most celebrated works, The Snail.

On the following day, Thursday, September 17, the capsule collection coined HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE for Tate will be available exclusively at the Tate Modern’s Terrace Shop and via their online store.

The HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE design team was inspired by The Snail upon one of their visits to Tate Modern last year. The vibrancy and movement found in Matisse’s colored paper cutouts spoke to the team directly and echoed the design and making practice of the brand—leading them to create the capsule collection.

The HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE design team has invited a contemporary dance ensemble to create a site-specific, interactive performance inspired by the making of The Snail, set against a scenography that unfolds throughout the evening.

This one-night-only event honors the brand’s ongoing engagement with the performing arts, demonstrating the enduring dialogue between ISSEY MIYAKE’s pleated clothing and dance through their shared fluidity of movement.

The Snail (1953, Henri Matisse)
After 1948, Henri Matisse was confined to bed due to ill health. Though he could no longer paint, he produced many works by cutting or tearing shapes from paper painted in bright colours. An assistant then pasted the cut-outs on a white sheet following his instructions. Matisse found this technique liberating: “Instead of drawing the outline and putting the colour inside it ... I draw straight into the colour.” Matisse got the idea for this composition while drawing a snail. “I became aware of an unrolling, I found an image in my mind purified of the shell, then I took the scissors.”
