ITAJIME SHIRT

A shirt that can be folded into a compact form, much like a handkerchief, is dyed while folded using the traditional Kyoto technique of Itajime. By firmly pressing the folded garment between wooden boards and dyeing it in this state, a checkered pattern emerges through the repetition of dyed and undyed sections. Subtle variations in the penetration of the dye, caused by slight gaps and overlapping layers of fabric, give rise to individual expressions within the otherwise regular pattern.
