CURVINESS

This textile was inspired by the “jar” created by ceramic artist Shoji Kamoda in 1978. The fabric uses jacquard weaving to capture the overlapping fine stripes, the luster of the glaze, and the textured surface of the jar. The fabric is cotton-based, with polyester yarn used in the areas representing the glaze’s luster. By varying the yarn count, the texture and variations in the lines on the jar’s surface are woven into the fabric. Creating the pattern through weaving rather than printing produces not only color but also depth derived from the yarn’s texture and the fabric’s weave. The design is structured around a silhouette reminiscent of the jar’s rounded form. The impression of lines intersecting and appearing slightly offset on the jar’s curved surface is expressed through the garment’s cut and the way the pattern flows.
