13.03.2026 | IM MEN “CLAY and CLOTH: SHOJI KAMODA and IM MEN” to be held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto

The special exhibition “Shoji Kamoda and IM MEN” will be held at The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, from Saturday, March 28 to Sunday, June 21.

CLAY and CLOTH: SHOJI KAMODA and IM MEN

The inspiration for the Spring Summer 2026 collection, “DANCING TEXTURE,” comes from the work of Japanese ceramic artist Shoji Kamoda (1933–1983). The moment they encountered the works of Shoji Kamoda, who strove for what he believed to be beauty of form without being bound to the framework of traditional craft or the current rules of ceramics, forward-looking and free in all respects, the IM MEN design team instinctively wished “to make these ceramics into clothes and wear them.” They researched the superb pieces among Kamoda’s works and, by visiting the place where he created them, discovered his forms that are liberated from existing structures, his deep textures, and the details that he painstakingly produced. By repeatedly going between the different materials of clay and cloth, the team created these expressions in clothing.

This exhibition displays pieces created with original textiles that embody the IM MEN 2026 Spring Summer “DANCING TEXTURE” collection, together with works by Shoji Kamoda from the collection of the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto that stirred the senses of the design team when they observed them up close. It will also screen a video composed of places connected to Shoji Kamoda, people’s memories, and the processes of creating the IM MEN collection.

These works incorporate an intense energy, transcending the gap between time and culture to stimulate people’s senses and move their hearts. Through this exhibition, we hope that visitors will experience the connections between items involved in craftsmanship and the people who love them, and the infinite possibilities born from this.
