02.11.2026 | ISSEY MIYAKE KYOTO | KURA “EARTHED MOSAIC”

The KURA gallery at ISSEY MIYAKE KYOTO presents KURA Exhibition “EARTHED MOSAIC.”

HaaT introduces EARTHED MOSAIC. The textile features a distinctive check pattern in a combination of five colors inspired by the natural world, giving it a unique textured surface, and has been made into a dress that creates draping by making the most of its square form. Cotton and wool yarns are used selectively for each color, while variations in the arrangement of the colors are woven into the fabric before it undergoes a finishing process. The resulting differences in shrinkage rates create random undulations across the surface. This subtle texture gives depth to the check pattern, which resembles an assemblage of small pieces of fabric in various colors, revealing a different expression depending on the angle from which it is viewed.

In this exhibition, we present EARTHED MOSAIC fabric created in the Bishu region, together with the dress, exploring its relationship with the graphic check pattern.
The digital pattern unfolding throughout the space is a reconstruction of the actual fabric’s color palette, rearranged into a uniform composition. Depending on the degree of enlargement and the angle of inclination, it may appear as though the pattern contains a mosaic of even more colors than the original check pattern. Alternatively, it may further accentuate the subtle play of light within the fabric’s undulations and the profound nuances of its colors. Whatever form it appears to take, the pattern serves as an entryway into an evocative world woven from five colors of yarn. Using the pattern, translated into a two-dimensional graphic, as a point of departure, we invite you to experience the rich allure of the textile.
